About Francesc

Francesc March de Ribot is an Honorary Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Otago. He holds the qualifications MD, PhD, FRANZCO, MS, MMed, FEBO, FRCS, FICO, FICS, DISSO and MBA. With over 17 years of experience as a New Zealand and internationally trained ophthalmologist and eye surgeon based at Dunedin Hospital, his clinical practice centres on retina surgery, glaucoma and complex cataract surgery. Dr March de Ribot completed a Doctor of Medicine with specialisation in ophthalmology together with a Master’s degree and PhD in eye research. He undertook more than three years of dedicated fellowship training in retinal diseases as well as additional fellowships in glaucoma and cataract surgery in New Zealand, Europe and North America.

His research interests encompass ophthalmology, glaucoma, retina and innovation, with a particular focus on understanding the causes of vision loss and improving the organisation of medical services to enhance clinical care. He has published several papers in peer-reviewed journals and has served as an investigator in international clinical studies, while regularly participating in national and international ophthalmology congresses. In teaching he contributes to the MB ChB programme for years 3–6, supervises Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) and Summer Research Scholarship students, convenes the Postgraduate Diploma in Ophthalmic Basic Sciences, coordinates the Dunedin Ophthalmology Clinical Course for senior registrars, supervises RANZCO Vocational Trainee Registrars and Master of Ophthalmology candidates, and supervises PhD students in ophthalmology.
