Professor Frank Bloomfield is a Professor of Neonatology at the University of Auckland and has served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) since March 2023. He previously directed the Liggins Institute from 2015 to 2023 and was promoted to Professor in 2013. Bloomfield trained in Manchester, Auckland, and Toronto, and worked for many years as a Consultant Neonatologist at Auckland City Hospital and National Women’s Health. He holds qualifications including BSc(Hons), MBChB from the University of Manchester, MRCP(UK), PhD in Paediatrics from the University of Auckland, FRACP, and FRSNZ. He was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to neonatology and perinatal research.
Bloomfield’s research centres on neonatology and perinatal science, with a focus on fetal and newborn nutrition, growth, and the long-term impacts of the early life environment on health outcomes. He has authored or co-authored hundreds of publications and maintains an active clinical and academic profile in these areas. Bloomfield served as President of the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand from 2014 to 2016 and has contributed to numerous research leadership roles at the University of Auckland.
