Geordie Williamson is Professor of Mathematics and Director of the Sydney Mathematical Research Institute at the University of Sydney, within the Faculty of Science. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Sydney and received his PhD in 2008 from the University of Freiburg under the supervision of Wolfgang Soergel. Following his doctorate, he held postdoctoral positions at the University of Oxford and the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics before returning to the University of Sydney.
Williamson’s research focuses on representation theory, algebraic geometry, and algebra, with contributions to geometric representation theory and applications in machine learning. He has received numerous awards and honours, including election as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2018 at age 36, making him the youngest living Fellow at the time, and as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA). Other recognitions include the Clay Research Award (2016), the New Horizons in Mathematics Prize (2017), the Australian Mathematical Society Medal (2018), an Australian Laureate Fellowship (2023), and the Max Planck–Humboldt Research Award (2024). He has delivered invited lectures at major international events such as the International Congress of Mathematicians and maintains an active role in research leadership and public engagement in mathematics.
