About George

George Souza serves as Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He earned a Master of Physiology in 2013 and a PhD in Physiology in 2017 from the University of São Paulo, Brazil. Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Souza joined the University of Virginia in 2017 as a postdoctoral researcher and lab technician in the laboratories of Dr. Stephen Abbott and Dr. Patrice Guyenet. In September 2024, he was appointed to his current faculty position. His research focuses on the neural control of blood pressure and respiration, with additional interests in neuroscience and physiology. Dr. Souza received the 2020 NCAR Brody Award. He has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, including work on breathing regulation and blood gas homeostasis after near-fatal hemorrhage, as well as studies examining the body’s natural alarm response to blood loss. His contributions have garnered significant citations in the fields of physiology and neuroscience.

Throughout his career at the University of Virginia, Dr. Souza has contributed to research advancing understanding of cardiovascular and respiratory neurobiology.
