Geraldo Wilson Fernandes is a full professor at the Instituto de Ciências Biológicas of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), where he serves in the Department of Genetics, Ecology and Evolution. He earned his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from UFMG in 1983, followed by a master’s degree in Ecology in 1987 and a PhD in Evolutionary Ecology in 1992, both from Northern Arizona University in the United States. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University in 2015–2016.
Fernandes is a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, elected in 2019, and holds the position of Pesquisador Nível 1A at CNPq. His research centers on ecology and the environment, with emphasis on biodiversity, environmental monitoring, ecosystem services, herbivory, environmental restoration, climate change, and community ecology. He coordinates the Centro de Conhecimento em Biodiversidade (Biodiv/UFMG), the Rede Pantanal de Pesquisa, and the Programa de Pesquisa em Biodiversidade (PPBio). He maintains affiliations with multiple graduate programs at UFMG and other institutions and has received international recognition, including selection as an ATBC Honorary Fellow in 2025 and a Best Academic Researcher Award. Fernandes has authored or co-authored hundreds of publications and maintains a highly cited Google Scholar profile with over 23,000 citations.
