About Giacomo

Giacomo Valle is an Assistant Professor in Signal Processing and Biomedical Engineering at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology. He joined Chalmers in June 2024 as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Bionics. His research centers on the development of sensorimotor neuroprostheses and brain-computer interfaces for individuals with neurological impairments, with a focus on restoring sensation and movement through biomimetic neural stimulation and interfacing techniques.

Valle earned a B.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Genoa in 2014 and an M.S. degree in Bioengineering with a curriculum in Neuroengineering and Bio-ICT. He completed his Ph.D. in Biorobotics at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa and EPFL Lausanne in 2019. Prior to his appointment at Chalmers, he conducted research at ETH Zürich, where he developed real-time neuroprosthetic devices for leg amputation, and at the University of Chicago, where he led work on biomimetic intracortical microstimulation strategies for brain-controlled bionic limbs in collaboration with the Cortical Bionics Research Group. He is the lead author of a 2025 study published in Science on tactile edges and motion via patterned microstimulation of the human somatosensory cortex, and has contributed to publications in The Lancet Digital Health and Nature Communications on topics including clinical trials for implantable neural prostheses and decoding phantom limb movements from intraneural recordings. Valle heads the Neural Bionics Lab at Chalmers, advancing neurotechnologies that connect the human nervous system with assistive devices.
