Gianmarco Mengaldo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS), where he joined in 2020. He also holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Mathematics at NUS. Mengaldo earned his BSc and MSc in Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano and his PhD in Aeronautical Engineering and Applied Mathematics from Imperial College London. He serves as an Honorary Research Fellow at Imperial College London and is the founder and head of MathEXLab, a research laboratory focused on mathematical and computational technologies for multidisciplinary applications.
His research centers on explainable artificial intelligence for science (XAI4Science), mathematical engineering, computational mathematics, and dynamical systems, with applications including weather and climate prediction using AI. In 2026, he was appointed to the Joint Advisory Group on AI at the World Meteorological Organization. Mengaldo has authored or co-authored publications including a 2021 paper in SIAM Review on high-fidelity large-eddy simulations via spectral element methods, which appeared on the journal cover.
