Professor Gijsbert Hoogendoorn is a Professor of Human Geography in the Department of Geography, Environmental Management and Energy Studies at the University of Johannesburg, within the Faculty of Science. He joined the university as an Associate Professor in May 2015, served as Head of Department from 2017 to 2020, and was promoted to Full Professor in August 2021. In November 2024, he delivered his professorial inaugural address titled “Whispered in Corridors: Intra-national Politics and Practices of Knowledge Production in South African Human Geography.”
Hoogendoorn holds a PhD in Geography from the University of the Free State, awarded in 2011, and an MA in Geography from the same institution in 2006. His research focuses on tourism geography, including second homes tourism, urban tourism, and climate change impacts on tourism in Southern Africa. He has published over 100 journal articles, book chapters, and monographs on these subjects. In 2024, he received the Gold Medal Award from the Society of South African Geographers in recognition of his contributions to geography in South Africa. Hoogendoorn has supervised numerous PhD and master’s theses to completion.
