Professor Godwell Nhamo is a Full Professor and Acting Head of the Institute for Sustainability and Corporate Citizenship at the University of South Africa in the College of Economic and Management Sciences. He holds a PhD focusing on Environmental Policy Implementation from Rhodes University, an MSc in Environmental Science from the University of Botswana, a BSc (Honours) in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Zimbabwe, and has completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of the Witwatersrand as well as a Programme in Project Management at the University of Pretoria. He maintains an NRF C1 rating for the period 2023-2028.
Professor Nhamo serves as the Exxaro Chair in Climate and Sustainability Transitions. His academic interests and specializations encompass coastal resilience, access and livelihoods, ocean observations and digital twinning, climate-induced loss and damage, disaster risk reduction, sustainable development including ESG and the SDGs, and artificial intelligence and future technologies deployment. He has authored or edited numerous books on topics such as climate change resilience in rural southern Africa, COVID-19 impacts on tourism and the SDGs, cyclones in southern Africa, and sustainable development goals for society. His extensive publication record includes recent peer-reviewed articles on climate change trends and impacts in South Africa, university engagement with the SDGs, and tourism resilience. Professor Nhamo contributes to major international reports and holds leadership roles advancing sustainability research and practice.
