Professor Graeme Clark is Laureate Professor Emeritus in the Department of Surgery at the University of Melbourne, within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. Born in 1935, he earned his MBBS with honours from the University of Sydney in 1957, followed by an MS in 1968 and a PhD in 1969 from the same institution. He trained as a medical doctor and specialist in otolaryngology, holding surgical positions at hospitals including the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital in London, and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne.
Clark was appointed foundation Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Melbourne in 1970, a position he held until 2004, and was named Clinical Professor at the age of 34. He established the Cochlear Implant Clinic at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, serving as surgeon in charge from 1985 to 2004, and founded the Bionic Ear Institute in 1984, directing it until 2005. His pioneering research led to the development of the multi-channel cochlear implant, the first device enabling severely to profoundly deaf individuals to understand speech, which has benefited over 650,000 people worldwide. Clark received the Companion of the Order of Australia in 2004, was named Senior Australian of the Year in 2001, and was awarded the 2026 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering.
