About György

György Buzsáki is the Biggs Professor of Neuroscience in the Department of Neuroscience and Professor in the Department of Neurology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He earned an MD from the University of Pécs in Hungary in 1974 and a PhD in neuroscience from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1984. His early career included positions as Assistant and Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Physiology, University of Pécs (1975–1988), Associate Professor in Residence at the Department of Neurosciences, University of California, San Diego (1988–1990), and progressive appointments at Rutgers University from Professor I (1990–1995) to Board of Governors Professor at the Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience (2003–2012). He joined New York University in 2012 as Biggs Professor of Neural Sciences at the NYU Neuroscience Institute.

Buzsáki’s research focuses on brain rhythms, hippocampal circuit activity, neuronal oscillations, memory formation, and spatial navigation. He is among the most highly cited neuroscientists, with over 550 publications. Notable honors include the Ralph W. Gerard Prize in Neuroscience (2020), the Goldman-Rakic Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Cognitive Neuroscience (2021), the Brain Prize (2011, shared), election to the National Academy of Sciences (2017), and the Krieg Cortical Discoverer Award (2001). He has served on editorial boards including Science, Neuron, and the Journal of Neuroscience, and delivered numerous distinguished lectures. His work has advanced understanding of the syntax of brain rhythms and their role in cognitive functions.
