Professor Hak Koon Tan is a Clinical Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School of the National University of Singapore. He serves as Senior Consultant in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Singapore General Hospital and as Chairman of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Academic Clinical Programme at SingHealth Duke-NUS. He also holds the position of Clinical Associate Professor at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. With more than 30 years of experience as a physician, Professor Tan has held key leadership roles including Chief of Obstetrics at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital and Designated Institutional Official of the SingHealth Residency. He is additionally Associate Dean in the Office of Academic Clinical Development at Duke-NUS Medical School.
Professor Tan received the National Outstanding Clinician Educator Award in 2021 in recognition of his contributions to medical education and mentorship. He has focused on supporting the professional development and well-being of junior doctors, medical students, residents, and other healthcare professionals through roles in residency training and educational leadership since the 1990s. His efforts include advocating for improved clinical learning environments and work-life balance, as well as leading the establishment of a crisis management pathway in 2018 to assist medical professionals experiencing burnout or stress. Professor Tan has contributed to research publications in obstetrics and gynaecology topics such as labour induction outcomes and uterus transplantation.
