About Haruki

Haruki Momma is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise at Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine. He earned a PhD in Disability Sciences from the Graduate School of Medicine at Tohoku University in 2011, following a master’s degree from the Graduate School of Human Informatics at Tohoku Gakuin University and an undergraduate degree from the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Tohoku Gakuin University. His academic career at Tohoku University includes roles as Postdoctoral Fellow and Assistant Professor in the Division of Biomedical Engineering for Health and Welfare, Assistant Professor in the Technical Division of the School of Engineering, Lecturer in the Department of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, and his current position as Associate Professor since October 2022.

Momma’s research focuses on exercise epidemiology, physical activity, fitness epidemiology, and related areas in sports science, hygiene and public health, and nutrition and health science. He has contributed to numerous cohort studies, including those involving the Tohoku Medical Megabank and the Japan Environment and Children’s Study, examining associations between physical activity patterns, muscle-strengthening activities, grip strength, and outcomes such as non-communicable diseases, depressive symptoms, and healthspan. Notable publications include the 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis in the British Journal of Sports Medicine on muscle-strengthening activities and risks of major non-communicable diseases. He holds leadership and editorial positions in professional societies, including roles as council member, academic committee chair, and editorial vice-chair in the Japan Society of Exercise Epidemiology and the Japan Society of Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine, as well as editorial contributions to the Japan Society of Health Support and the Japanese Society of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences. Momma participates in academic development committees, such as that of the Asian College of Sports Science, and has organized conferences for these organizations.
