About Helen

Helen M. Blau is the Donald E. and Delia B. Baxter Foundation Professor and Director of the Baxter Laboratory for Stem Cell Biology at Stanford University, with a courtesy appointment as Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. She earned a B.A. in Biology from the University of York in 1969, an M.A. in Biology from Harvard University in 1970, and a Ph.D. in Biology from Harvard University in 1975. She completed postdoctoral training in the departments of Biochemistry and Biophysics and the Division of Medical Genetics at the University of California, San Francisco, before joining the Stanford faculty as Assistant Professor in 1978. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 1986 and to Professor in 1991. She served as Chair of the Department of Molecular Pharmacology from 1997 to 2002 and has directed the Baxter Laboratory for Stem Cell Biology since 2000.

Dr. Blau’s research focuses on cellular reprogramming, the molecular mechanisms governing stem cell function in muscle regeneration and aging, and strategies for cell rejuvenation. Her laboratory investigates how perturbations in the intracellular or extracellular environment influence cell fate, with applications to regenerative medicine, muscle wasting disorders, and age-related decline. She has identified small molecules and niche factors that enhance muscle stem cell function and has explored the role of telomeres in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Dr. Blau has received numerous honors, including the U.S. National Medal of Science in 2025, membership in the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Medicine, Royal Society, and other academies. She previously served as President of the American Society for Developmental Biology and the International Society for Differentiation, and as a member of the National Advisory Council for the National Institute on Aging.
