Dr Helen Murray is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Anatomy and Medical Imaging within the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland. She leads the Brain Injury and Neurodegeneration research group at the Centre for Brain Research. Dr Murray completed a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Biomedical Science at the University of Auckland in 2012 and a PhD in Anatomy at the same institution in 2017, supervised by Professor Maurice Curtis. She subsequently undertook a post-doctoral fellowship in 2020 with Dr Alan Koretsky at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, USA, before returning to New Zealand.
Her research focuses on neuroanatomy and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease and chronic traumatic encephalopathy associated with repetitive head injuries. Dr Murray holds a Neurological Foundation of New Zealand Senior Research Fellowship and has received the University of Auckland Early Career Researcher Excellence Award in 2025, along with earlier distinctions including the Centre for Brain Research Health Education Trust Post-Doctoral Fellowship and the Brain Research New Zealand Health Education Trust Post-Doctoral Fellowship. She has supervised doctoral students and contributed to studies on brain tissue changes, including those related to COVID-19. Professional Email: null
