Prof. Dr. med. Helmut Greim is a German toxicologist and former professor at the Technical University of Munich. Born on May 9, 1935, in Berlin, he studied medicine at the University of Freiburg and the Free University of Berlin. He earned his Dr. med. degree and completed his habilitation before holding academic positions, including at the University of Tübingen. In 1983, he was appointed Professor of Toxicology and Director of the Institute for Toxicology and Environmental Hygiene at the Technical University of Munich, a role he held until his emeritus status in 2002. His research has focused on regulatory toxicology, genotoxicity, DNA damage, risk assessment of chemicals, and environmental hygiene, contributing to numerous publications in these areas.
Greim has authored or co-authored hundreds of scientific articles, reviews, and book chapters, with significant citation impact in toxicology. He has served on expert committees and contributed to the history of toxicology at TUM through publications such as his 2024 review in Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology. In 2015, he received Germany's highest civilian honor for his contributions. His work continues to influence regulatory approaches to chemical safety and risk assessment.
