About Hemal

Hemal Patel is a Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. He earned a BS in Biology from Truman State University in 1994 and a PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2002. Following his graduate studies, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Paul Insel in the Department of Pharmacology at UC San Diego and joined the faculty in the Department of Anesthesiology in 2005. He has held the position of Vice Chair for Research in Anesthesiology and maintains a dual appointment as a VA Research Career Scientist and Research Pharmacologist at the VA San Diego Healthcare System.

Professor Patel’s research focuses on caveolin and mitochondrial biology, with applications to cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, aging, diabetes, and cancer. He has expanded this work to examine the biological effects of mind-body interventions such as meditation. He serves on multiple editorial boards, including those of the American Journal of Physiology: Heart and Circulatory Physiology, American Journal of Physiology: Cell Physiology, Physiological Reviews, and the British Journal of Pharmacology. He has received funding as a principal or co-investigator from the Veterans Affairs, National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and other agencies, and he has been named a VA Research Career Scientist.
