Herman Wasserman is Professor and Chair of the Department of Journalism at Stellenbosch University, where he also serves as Director of the Centre for Information Integrity in Africa. He holds a doctorate from Stellenbosch University and previously worked as a journalist before entering academia. His research focuses on media in Africa, including tabloid journalism, media ethics, the relationship between media and democracy, media geopolitics and power, conflict and media, and disinformation in the Global South.
Wasserman has authored or edited 17 books, including Tabloid Journalism in South Africa, Media, Geopolitics, and Power: A Media Sociology of the BRICS Countries, Media, Conflict and Democracy in Africa, and Disinformation in the Global South. He is a Fellow and Board Member of the International Communication Association and a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa. His honors include the Georg Foster Prize from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Neva Prize from St Petersburg State University, a Fulbright Fellowship, and the Stals Prize for Communication Science from the Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns. He has held previous academic appointments at the University of Cape Town and Rhodes University.
