Professor Hilary Whitehouse is an Adjunct Associate Professor at James Cook University affiliated with the Cairns Institute in the College of Arts, Society and Education. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Education and has maintained a long-term commitment to research in science education, environmental education, climate change education, biodiversity education, and gender, with explorations of new ecofeminism and feminist new materialism. Whitehouse previously served as Deputy Dean of the Graduate Research School from 2016 to 2023. In this role she contributed to the University's Research Education Sub-Committee and developed curriculum and pedagogy for research education at JCU. She worked as a full-time teacher educator on the Cairns campus for many years and collaborated with Department of Education colleagues to create Science on The Oval (SOTO) in 2003, a program that has continued for over two decades. Whitehouse serves as a long-time executive editor for the Journal of Environmental Education and as an associate editor for the Australian Journal of Environmental Education. She is a life member of the Australian Association for Environmental Education. In addition to her academic roles, she volunteers her research skills with the Bats and Trees Society of Cairns, focusing on anti-extinction efforts in tropical Queensland.
Throughout her career at James Cook University, Whitehouse has contributed to editorial leadership in environmental education journals and supported research higher degree programs through administrative and curriculum development positions. Her work emphasizes practical applications in education settings, including initiatives that connect scientific learning with environmental and biodiversity concerns. As an adjunct faculty member, she continues to engage with research communities and volunteer organizations aligned with her expertise in climate change education and related fields. These contributions reflect a sustained focus on advancing educational practices that address contemporary environmental challenges while supporting institutional research training and journal quality in her discipline.
