About Hiroshi

Hiroshi Sugimoto is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Graduate School of Engineering, Kobe University. He earned a Master’s degree in Engineering and a Ph.D. in Engineering from Kobe University. His academic career at the university includes service as an Assistant Professor from 2016 to 2022, followed by his current appointment as Associate Professor (Distinguished Associate Professor) beginning in October 2022. Prior roles include JSPS Special Research Fellow positions (DC1 and PD) and a visiting researcher position at the Boston University Photonics Center.

Sugimoto’s research centers on nanophotonics and nanomaterials, with a focus on silicon nanoparticles, quantum dots, Mie resonances, structural coloration, and related optical phenomena. He has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed papers on topics such as silicon nanosphere metasurfaces, optical responses of nanoparticles, and applications in fluorescence enhancement and photocatalysis. Notable publications include works in Advanced Optical Materials, Nano Letters, and ACS Photonics. He has contributed to books including Silicon Nanomaterials Sourcebook (CRC Press, 2017) and chapters on quantum dot technologies. Sugimoto has received multiple honors, including the MEXT Young Scientist Award in 2023, several Kobe University President’s Awards, and the Applied Physics Society Lecture Encouragement Award. He serves on committees of the Applied Physics Society, including as secretary of the Photonics Division and program editing committee member. His work has been featured in university press releases on structural color inks and silicon-based nanomaterials.
