Hisanori Fukunaga is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Hokkaido University, with affiliations including the Center for Environmental and Health Sciences, the Institute for Academic Innovation, and the One Health Research Center. He holds a medical degree from Yokohama City University School of Medicine and a PhD in Medicine from Queen's University Belfast, awarded in 2019. Following his medical training, Fukunaga completed a clinical residency at Soma General Hospital in Fukushima, Japan, after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, an experience that shaped his subsequent research career. He previously conducted research at Queen's University Belfast on radiation-induced male infertility.
Fukunaga is a physician-scientist specializing in radiation biology, health physics, genetics, and environmental and occupational health. His research focuses on the hereditary effects of ionizing radiation, biological responses to spatially fractionated radiation fields, and the impacts of environmental stresses on mitochondrial DNA. He serves as a task group member of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). Fukunaga has received numerous awards, including the John D. Boice Jr. Young Investigator Award from the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements in 2026, the Best Researcher Award from the Faculty of Health Sciences at Hokkaido University in 2026, and the Best Paper Award in 2025. He is also a recipient of the ICRP Cousins Award finalist recognition, the Asian Association for Radiation Research Young Scientist Award, and other honors from institutions such as the Radiation Research Society and the Japan Health Physics Society.
