Ian W. Holloway, PhD, MPH, LCSW, is a tenured professor and director of research and innovation at the UCLA Joe C. Wen School of Nursing. He previously served as a professor in the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs Department of Social Welfare. Dr. Holloway earned a BA from the University of California, San Diego in 2001, MSW and MPH degrees from Columbia University in 2007, and a PhD from the University of Southern California School of Social Work in 2012. His applied behavioral health research examines contextual factors contributing to health disparities among sexual and gender minority populations. He is an expert in social network analysis and focuses on harnessing social media and new technologies for health promotion and disease prevention, with particular emphasis on HIV prevention and care as well as substance use.
Dr. Holloway directs the Southern California HIV/AIDS Policy Research Center and has served as principal investigator on multiple studies funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Department of Defense, and the California HIV/AIDS Research Program. He was named editor-in-chief of Sexuality Research and Social Policy in 2022. Among his honors are the Avenir Award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the Deborah K. Padgett Early Career Achievement Award from the Society for Social Work and Research. Recent publications include co-authored works in 2024 such as “The Associations Between Intimate Partner Violence and Mental Health Outcomes Among Sexual Minority Men: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis” in Trauma, Violence, & Abuse and “Novel Machine Learning HIV Intervention for Sexual and Gender Minority Young People Who Have Sex With Men (uTECH): Protocol for a Randomized Comparison Trial” in JMIR Research Protocols.
