About Imran

Dr. Imran Zualkernan is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the American University of Sharjah. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, awarded in 1991, and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with high distinction from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, awarded in 1983. His professional experience includes serving as Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering at Pennsylvania State University from 1992 to 2004, as well as holding C-level positions such as Chief Technology Officer at Knowledge Platform Inc. in Singapore and Chief Executive Officer at Askari Information Systems Limited in Pakistan. He has also worked as a Principal Software Design Engineer and completed a post-doctoral research associate position at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota.

Dr. Zualkernan has taught at the University of Minnesota and Pennsylvania State University. His teaching areas include deep learning, low-cost hardware/software co-design, and the Internet of Things. His research areas encompass the Internet of Things, deep learning, big data, and educational analytics. He has published over 170 papers in refereed conference proceedings and journals. Notable honors include the IEEE Consumer Electronics Society Chester Sall Award for the best paper in the IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics in 2018, a best paper award for “Towards an Audio-Based CNN for Classroom Observation on a Smartwatch” at the IEEE/ITU International Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Good in 2020, and a best short paper award for “Little Genius: An Experiment in Internet of Tangible Learning Things” at the 20th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies in 2020. He is a member of IEEE.
