James Bullard serves as the Dr. Samuel R. Allen Dean of Purdue University’s Mitch Daniels School of Business, a position he assumed in August 2023. Prior to this role, he was president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis from April 2008 until August 2023. Bullard earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics and a Bachelor of Science degree in quantitative methods and information systems from St. Cloud State University in 1984. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Indiana University Bloomington in 1990.
Bullard is a noted economist whose research focuses on macroeconomics and monetary policy. His work has appeared in leading journals including the American Economic Review, the Journal of Monetary Economics, Macroeconomic Dynamics, and the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking. He previously served as co-editor of the Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control and as a peer reviewer for numerous periodicals and institutions. Bullard began his career as an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis in 1990, later advancing to vice president and deputy director of research for monetary analysis. He holds an appointment as honorary professor of economics at Washington University in St. Louis. Bullard is recognized for his contributions to economic policy discussions and his leadership in central banking and business education.
