James Okwe Chibueze is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of South Africa’s College of Science, Engineering and Technology. He serves as Head of the UNISA Centre for Astrophysics and Space Sciences. He holds a BSc in Physics with First Class Honours (2005) and an MSc in Astrophysics (2008) from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and a PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics from Kagoshima University, Japan (2013).
Chibueze’s research specialisations include astronomy and astrophysics, with particular expertise in astrometry, radio interferometry, star formation, masers, galaxies and galaxy clusters. He has published over 100 papers in refereed journals and applies radio interferometric techniques to study massive star-forming regions in the Milky Way and synchrotron radiation. He is a recipient of the Royal Society Rising Star Africa Prize and the Royal Society Wolfson Visiting Fellowship, and holds an NRF C2 rating. Chibueze chairs the Science Committee of the African Astronomical Society, serves on the Users Committee of the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory and the e-MERLIN Steering Committee, and is involved in international astronomical bodies. He supervises numerous postgraduate students across multiple African countries and beyond.
