Associate Professor James Hutchison is a member of the School of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne. He holds the position of Associate Professor in Physical Chemistry. His research centres on molecular photophysics, with interests in polaritonics, plasmonics, 2D materials and single molecule spectroscopy. Dr Hutchison's work explores new avenues for efficient light-to-chemical energy conversion and ultra-sensitive molecular (bio)sensing, including studies on light-matter interactions in optical cavities and the development of photoactive nanomaterials.

He completed his PhD at the University of Melbourne. Hutchison has held appointments at the University of Melbourne, including roles as Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in the School of Chemistry, and has served as Director of 3rd Year Studies. His contributions appear in peer-reviewed publications on topics such as cavity strong coupling and quantum batteries. Hutchison maintains an active research profile through collaborations and projects funded in part by international partnerships, including work on thermal energy harvesting materials.
