About Jari

Jari Tiihonen is Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Karolinska Institutet since 2011, affiliated with the Department of Clinical Neuroscience and the Centre for Psychiatry Research. His research focuses on the real-world effectiveness of psychopharmacological treatments for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, unipolar depression, substance abuse, personality disorders, and ADHD. Additional areas include psychopharmacology, stem cell studies on the neurobiology of schizophrenia, functional brain imaging, autoradiography studies on dopamine and serotonin receptors and transporters, and the epidemiology, genetics, and neurobiology of schizophrenia, substance dependence, and violent and suicidal behavior. His group employs pharmacoepidemiological methods using nationwide databases and has conducted randomized controlled trials on treatment-resistant schizophrenia and substance dependence.

Tiihonen has authored 645 papers in peer-reviewed journals as of February 2026, with an H-index of 82 and over 26,000 citations. Publications from his research group have influenced schizophrenia treatment practices worldwide and were cited in the American Psychiatric Association Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Patients with Schizophrenia (3rd edition, 2021). He received the Matti Äyräpää Award, Finland's most prestigious medical prize, in 2022. In 2025, he was named a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate and a Highly Ranked Scholar (top 0.05%, ranked #5 worldwide in schizophrenia) by Scholar GPS. He also holds a professorship at the University of Eastern Finland.
