Dr. Jeffrey Wichtel is a veterinarian, researcher, and academic leader who has served as Dean of the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) at the University of Guelph since 2015. He holds the position of Professor in the Department of Population Medicine. Wichtel obtained his BVSc and PhD degrees from Massey University in New Zealand and is board-certified by the American College of Theriogenologists. Prior to his appointment at OVC, he held senior roles at the Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island, including Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, Department Chair, Director of Animal Resources, and Acting Dean. His earlier career included faculty positions at Massey University and North Carolina State University, as well as a residency at Iowa State University.
Wichtel is recognized for his expertise in ruminant health, animal nutrition, reproduction, and veterinary education. He has authored more than 150 scientific publications and secured millions of dollars in research funding as a principal or collaborating investigator. His research focuses on trace element and vitamin nutrition in ruminants and horses, as well as livestock production and disease. He serves as an associate editor of the Canadian Journal of Veterinary Research and has contributed to international development projects in Haiti and Kenya.
