About Jennifer

Jennifer Hoving, also known as J. Claire Hoving, is an Associate Professor in the Division of Immunology within the Department of Pathology at the University of Cape Town. She earned her PhD from the University of Cape Town. Hoving holds the position of Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellow in Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She serves as group leader of the AFRICA CMM Medical Mycology Unit, which is affiliated with the MRC UK Centre for Medical Mycology. Additionally, she is an honorary senior research fellow at the University of Exeter and a contributing investigator at the Wellcome Centre for Infectious Diseases Research in Africa (CIDRI-Africa). She is a member of the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town.

Hoving is a basic immunologist whose research centers on host immune responses to disease, with a particular focus on HIV-related opportunistic fungal infections. Her work examines the pathogenesis and immune responses to Pneumocystis jirovecii, a leading cause of pneumonia in patients with advanced HIV, as well as Emergomyces africanus, a dimorphic fungal pathogen prevalent in South African HIV patients. She also investigates co-infections involving these fungi and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Hoving has received the South African Medical Research Council Silver Award. She contributes to advancing understanding of protective immunity against neglected fungal pathogens in sub-Saharan Africa through her leadership in collaborative research initiatives and training efforts in medical mycology.
