About Jesse

Dr. Jesse Papenburg is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine and an Associate Member of the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health. He holds an MDCM and MSc from McGill University and is certified FRCPC in pediatrics, pediatric infectious diseases, and medical microbiology. Dr. Papenburg completed his BSc in Microbiology and Immunology with a minor in Philosophy at McGill University in 1998, followed by his MDCM in 2002. He undertook residency training in pediatrics and subspecialty training in pediatric infectious diseases and medical microbiology at the Montreal Children’s Hospital and McGill University Health Centre. He then completed a research fellowship in the molecular virology of RNA respiratory viruses at Laval University and earned an MSc in epidemiology at McGill University.

As a clinician-scientist, Dr. Papenburg’s research focuses on the epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of severe viral lower respiratory tract infections in children, with particular emphasis on respiratory syncytial virus, influenza, and other respiratory viruses. He has authored more than 175 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and has secured over $3 million in personally attributable research funding. Dr. Papenburg serves as Vice-Chair of the Pediatric Investigators Collaborative Network on Infections in Canada and as Co-Director of the McGill University Health Centre Vaccine Study Centre. He is a voting member of Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization, where he leads the influenza working group, and was appointed Chair of the Quebec Immunization Committee at the Institut national de santé publique du Québec in 2025. His contributions have been recognized with the 2024 National Bank Medical Award of Excellence from the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation and the 2022 McGill Principal’s Prize for Public Engagement through Media in the Emerging Researchers Category. Dr. Papenburg also held a Chercheur-boursier clinicien Junior-1 award from the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé from 2016 to 2021.
