About Jianming

Jianming Zhang is a Professor at the Zhangjiang Institute for Advanced Study and the Institute of Translational Medicine at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He earned a B.Sc. from Anhui University in 1992, an M.Sc. from Peking University Health Science Center in 1995, and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 2004. His career includes positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2004 to 2005, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School from 2006 to 2012, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School from 2013 to 2017, and Shanghai Ruijin Hospital from 2018 to 2022, before joining Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2023.

Zhang’s research focuses on innovative drug discovery and skin biology, particularly the development of protein kinase inhibitors as chemical probes to decode cellular signaling networks, investigate mechanisms of tumor drug resistance, and explore the natural evolution and aging of skin stem cells. He has published 86 papers in high-impact journals including Nature and Cancer Research, with over 13,800 citations and an h-index of 41. He holds six international patents and contributed to the discovery of widely used research compounds such as GNF-5 and Torin1, as well as the development of the allosteric BCR-ABL inhibitor Asciminib. He is currently leading the development of fourth-generation EGFR inhibitors, which entered clinical trials in 2022. His work is supported by grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Shanghai Science and Technology Committee, and pharmaceutical industry collaborations.
