About Jillian

Professor Jillian Carr is a Professor in the College of Medicine and Public Health at Flinders University. She completed a BSc at the University of Adelaide in 1990, followed by a BSc with First Class Honours in Biochemistry in 1991 and a PhD in Biochemistry in 1995, also from the University of Adelaide. Her early career included work in plant virology before postdoctoral research at the IMVS/SA Pathology from 1996 to 2008, where she studied HIV replication mechanisms and virus-host interactions, later contributing to clinical HIV drug resistance diagnostics until 2011.

Since joining Flinders University full-time in 2011, Professor Carr has focused on medical virology, with particular interests in dengue virus, Zika virus, and enteric viruses and their interactions with host cells such as macrophages. Her current research examines viral inflammatory responses in the brain, including interactions involving microglia and the complement system, using in vitro and in vivo models and advanced microscopy. She was appointed Professor of Virology in 2023 and is a Fellow of the Australian Society for Microbiology. Professor Carr contributes to teaching in microbiology and infectious diseases across undergraduate and honours programs and holds committee roles including with the Australasian Virology Society and the Australian Society for Microbiology.
