Jo Hsu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing at the University of Texas at Austin and serves as Associate Chair of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. They are also core faculty for the Center for Asian American Studies and a faculty affiliate of the LGBTQ Studies Program. Hsu holds a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing, both from Pennsylvania State University. Their research examines how narratives shape public life, policy, beliefs, and social imagination, with particular attention to how stories constrain or expand opportunities for structurally marginalized communities. Key areas of focus include public rhetorics, storytelling and narrative rhetorics, trans and queer studies, disability studies and accessibility, rhetorics of health and medicine, and Asian American rhetorics.
Hsu's scholarship appears in journals such as Rhetoric Society Quarterly, Quarterly Journal of Speech, Women’s Studies in Communication, and College Composition and Communication. They are the author of the book Constellating Home: Trans and Queer Asian American Rhetorics, published by Ohio State University Press in 2022 and recipient of four national book awards. Their creative writing has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and published in outlets including Kartika Review and Color Bloq. Hsu has contributed op-eds to The Huffington Post, The Boston Globe, and The Progressive, and has served as a Public Voices Fellow of the Op-Ed Project. They have delivered keynotes, workshops, and invited lectures on narrative strategy and related topics.
