About João Paulo

João Paulo Becker Lotufo earned his medical degree from the Faculdade de Ciências Médicas da Santa Casa de São Paulo in 1979. He completed specialization in Pediatric Pulmonology in 1994 and obtained a master's degree in Pediatrics from the Universidade de São Paulo in 2009. In 2014, he received his doctorate in Pediatrics from the same institution, with a thesis evaluating the therapeutic outcomes of a multidisciplinary antitobacco outpatient clinic.

Dr. Lotufo serves as coordinator of the antitobacco project at the Hospital Universitário da Universidade de São Paulo and leads the Projeto Dr. Bartô e os Doutores da Saúde, which focuses on preventing smoking, early pregnancy, and alcohol use in schools across São Paulo. His clinical and research activities center on asthma, wheezing infants, active and passive smoking, alcohol, and marijuana, including studies involving montelukast for asthma and serum cotinine measurements. He previously held positions as secretary of the scientific department of pneumology at the Sociedade Brasileira de Pediatria and as advisor to the direction of the Hospital Universitário da USP for external patients. He has organized and participated in numerous conferences, courses, and lectures on pediatric respiratory issues and substance prevention, representing related topics for the Sociedade Brasileira de Pediatria and the Sociedade de Pediatria de São Paulo.
