Professor John Dewar AO served as Interim Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Wollongong from June 2024 to February 2025. An Emeritus Professor, he previously held the position of Vice-Chancellor at La Trobe University from 2012 to 2024. His academic career includes senior leadership roles at the University of Melbourne, where he served as Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Relations), and at Griffith University, where he was Dean of the Law School, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Business and Law, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic). He is a graduate of the University of Oxford and Griffith University, where he earned his PhD.
Professor Dewar is an internationally recognised family law specialist. He taught at the Universities of Lancaster and Warwick in the United Kingdom and was a Fellow and Tutor in Law at Hertford College, Oxford. He has held appointments including Chair of Universities Australia from 2021 to 2023 and member of the Family Law Council from 1998 to 2004, serving as its chair. In 2020, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to education through leadership roles in the universities sector and to professional organisations. He is currently a partner at KordaMentha.
