John Hattie is Laureate Professor Emeritus in the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne. He holds a PhD in statistics from the University of Toronto awarded in 1981, along with a Masters degree, Graduate Diploma, and Bachelors degree with honours from the University of Otago. His research interests centre on psychometrics and measurement, performance indicators, and models of measurement and evaluation of teaching and learning. Hattie has held the position of Director of the Melbourne Education Research Institute at the University of Melbourne since March 2011. Prior to this appointment he served as Professor of Education and Project Director of asTTle at the University of Auckland in New Zealand.
Hattie is the author of the book Visible Learning, first published in 2009, which synthesises findings from over 800 meta-analyses relating to student achievement. He has also authored Visible Learning for Teachers, published in 2011, and Visible Learning: The Sequel, released in 2023. His work has been recognised with the award of Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Hattie’s research has contributed to discussions on evidence-based practices in education through large-scale syntheses of quantitative studies.
