About John

John Hooper is an Honorary Professor at the University of Queensland. He holds a BSc with Honours I in Chemistry from the University of Queensland, awarded with the University Medal in 1994, and a PhD in Cancer Pathology from the same institution in 1999. His career includes postdoctoral fellowships at the Queensland University of Technology and the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, supported by NHMRC CJ Martin/RG Menzies Fellowships. He progressed through NHMRC RD Wright and ARC Future Fellowships before serving as Associate Professor at the Mater Research Institute-UQ from 2010 to 2015 and as Professor of Cancer Biology from 2016.

Professor Hooper leads the Cancer Biology Research Group at Mater Research Institute-UQ within the Faculty of Medicine. His research focuses on the identification and evaluation of molecular targets and biomarkers for cancers of the ovary, pancreas, prostate, bowel and other sites, with emphasis on cell surface receptors for targeted detection and therapy. His work has produced over 125 publications, attracted approximately $17 million in funding, generated four patents and supported phase 1 clinical trials for radio-imaging agents in ovarian and bladder cancer. He maintains close collaborations with clinicians at Mater, Royal Brisbane and Women’s, Wesley and Princess Alexandra Hospitals.
