John Joseph Jonas was a professor of metallurgy at McGill University in the Faculty of Engineering. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Metallurgical Engineering from McGill University in 1954 and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Sciences from the University of Cambridge in 1960. Upon returning to Montreal, he began teaching mechanical metallurgy at McGill and developed a research laboratory equipped for experimental work on high-temperature deformation of metals.
Jonas held the Birks Chair of Metallurgy and the CSIRA/NSERC Chair of Steel Processing at McGill. His research focused on the hot rolling behaviour of metals and softening processes in steel processing, resulting in more accurate computer models for industrial rolling mills. He and his collaborators published over eight hundred technical papers on metal shaping and forming. Jonas received numerous awards, including the Officer of the Order of Canada in 1993, the National Order of Quebec, the Prix du Québec – Marie-Victorin in 1995, the Réaumur and Gold Medals of the French Metallurgical Society, the Hatchett Medal, the NSERC Award of Excellence, the Canada Council Killam Award, and medals from the American Society for Metals and other organizations. He was elected a Fellow of the American Society for Metals, the Royal Society of Canada, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He served as a visiting professor in numerous countries and on the Quebec Science Council and as Chairman of the AECL R&D Advisory Panel. His h-index was 92 with more than 32,000 citations.
