Rate My Professor John Paul Makumbi

Dr John Paul Makumbi is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Microbiology at Stellenbosch University, affiliated with the DSI/NRF SARChI in African Microbiome Innovation and the School for Data Science and Computational Thinking. He also maintains affiliations with the Department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology at the University of Pretoria. His research centres on antimicrobial resistance and microbial ecology, with a focus on the persistence of high-risk antimicrobial resistance genes in extracellular DNA along urban wastewater-river continua in South Africa.

Dr Makumbi earned a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Microbiology cum laude from the University of Pretoria in 2018. He subsequently completed a Master of Science in Medical Microbiology and a Doctor of Philosophy in Microbial Genetics at the University of Pretoria. As first author, he led a study published in Cell Reports in 2026 examining the environmental persistence of antimicrobial resistance genes in wastewater treatment systems and connected freshwater environments. His work contributes to understanding microbial processes relevant to water reuse and public health in African contexts.
