Jon Patricios is a Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he coordinates the Wits Sport and Health (WiSH) Research Group. He holds an MBBCh from the University of the Witwatersrand (1992) and an MMedSci in Sports and Exercise Medicine from the University of Sheffield (1995). He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (FACSM), the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (UK) (FFSEM), and the International Sports Medicine Federation (FFIMS). Patricios has practiced sports and exercise medicine for over 28 years and serves as Director of Waterfall Sports Orthopaedic Surgery in Johannesburg and Director of Sports Concussion South Africa. His research focuses on sport-related concussion and the health benefits of physical activity, with authorship of more than 120 peer-reviewed publications. He is co-lead author of the 2023 International Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport and serves as an editor of the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Patricios has held leadership roles including two terms as President of the South African Sports Medicine Association (SASMA) and board membership in the Concussion in Sports Group. He has acted as team physician for numerous professional and international sports teams and consults on concussion for organizations including World Rugby, UEFA, and the NFL.
Patricios maintains additional appointments as Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand and has contributed to international guidelines and committees on head injury in sport. His career includes prior positions at Morningside Sports Medicine and the Centre for Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics in Johannesburg, along with medical officer roles in the United Kingdom. He has received awards such as life membership from SASMA and an international travelling fellowship from the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine.
