Joost J. Vlassak is the Abbott and James Lawrence Professor of Materials Engineering at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. He serves as Area Chair for Materials Science and Mechanical Engineering. Vlassak earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science from Stanford University in 1994. He joined the Harvard faculty in 2000 and was promoted to full professor with tenure in 2007. His research centers on the thermo-mechanical behavior of engineering materials, including the development of experimental methods to study thin films and other advanced materials. Vlassak has contributed to work involving nanofabrication and nanocalorimetry techniques with applications in materials science and related fields. He maintains a highly cited body of work, with over 31,000 citations recorded on Google Scholar in areas such as mechanics and materials.
