José Luiz Proença-Modena is an associate professor (MS5.1) of virology in the Department of Genetics, Evolution, Microbiology and Immunology at the Institute of Biology of Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP). He earned a bachelor's degree and teaching licensure in biology from FFCLRP-USP in 2001 and 2002, respectively, followed by a master's degree in 2005 and a PhD in 2009 in cellular and molecular biology and pathogenic bioagents from FMRP-USP. He completed postdoctoral training in virology at the Virology Research Center of FMRP-USP from 2009 to 2012 and at Washington University in St. Louis from 2013 to 2015.
Since joining UNICAMP in 2015, Proença-Modena has served as coordinator of the Laboratory of Emerging Viruses (LEVE). His research focuses on the pathogenic mechanisms of emerging arboviruses and respiratory viruses, including Oropouche virus, Zika virus, chikungunya virus, human bocavirus, and SARS-CoV-2, using animal and cell culture models to study innate and adaptive immune responses. He is a CNPq productivity fellow and has held leadership roles including secretary of the Brazilian Society of Virology (2020–2024), coordinator of the FAPESP Zika research program in 2016, and founder of the Zika-Unicamp Network and the Unicamp COVID-19 Task Force. He has contributed to molecular diagnosis and research on COVID-19 epidemiology and pathophysiology and serves as a reviewer for national and international journals. Proença-Modena has authored more than 60 indexed papers and two book chapters in virology and microbiology.
