Joshua Kurek is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Environment at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada, where he leads the Environmental Change and Aquatic Biomonitoring (ECAB) Laboratory. He holds a BSc in Biology from the State University of New York at Geneseo, an MSc in Biology and a PhD in Biology from the University of New Brunswick, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Queen’s University. Kurek’s research focuses on the responses of lakes, rivers, and wetlands to environmental stressors including pollution, climate change, and legacy contaminants. His interdisciplinary work incorporates paleolimnology, geoscience, and direct monitoring of freshwater ecosystems to understand historical and ongoing changes in their structure and function. He has secured multiple grants from organizations such as NSERC, the New Brunswick Environmental Trust Fund, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and others for projects examining topics like DDT legacies, gold mining impacts, microplastics, and dissolved oxygen trends. Kurek teaches courses including Limnology, Biomonitoring Methods, and seminars in environment, while mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in environmental science. He serves as Chair of the Environment Division for Science Atlantic and contributes to regional conferences and collaborative research across the Maritime provinces.
