Joshua M. Hyman is Associate Professor of Economics at Amherst College. He earned a B.A. in Quantitative Economics, magna cum laude, from Tufts University in 2005, an M.A. in Economics from the University of Michigan in 2010, and a Ph.D. in Economics and Public Policy from the University of Michigan in 2013. Prior to his appointment at Amherst College, Hyman served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Policy at the University of Connecticut from 2014 to 2019 and as Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan from 2013 to 2014. He joined Amherst College as Assistant Professor of Economics in 2019 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2023.
Hyman is a labor and public economist whose research focuses on the economics of education, school finance, and inequality. His work examines the effects of education policies on student achievement, educational attainment, and the reduction of economic and racial inequality. He is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Hyman’s research has appeared in journals including the Review of Economics and Statistics, American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, Journal of Labor Economics, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, and Education Finance and Policy. He has received funding from the Spencer Foundation and the Smith Richardson Foundation, among other sources. Hyman serves as Associate Editor of Education Finance and Policy and has held editorial roles with the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management. His teaching includes courses on microeconomics, the economics of inequality, and education and inequality.
