Rate My Professor Jouni Takalo

Jouni Takalo is a senior researcher at the University of Sheffield in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. His work focuses on vision, neural coding and computational neuroscience, including the development of biophysically realistic statistical models of insect vision such as in Drosophila photoreceptors. He has contributed to research on microsaccadic sampling of moving image information and synaptic mechanisms that synchronise vision to high-speed behaviour. In 2026, he led the development of a model demonstrating how thousands of tiny sensors work together to reshape visual signals, enabling fast and reliable reactions at high speeds.
