Judson Laughter is a professor of English education in the Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He also serves as Director of Faculty Affairs for the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences. Laughter earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Bachelor of Arts degree in French from Vanderbilt University, graduating with honors in each subject. He studied English literature at Keble College of Oxford University as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. He later earned a doctoral degree in teaching and learning from Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College.
Prior to his faculty appointment, Laughter taught English, language arts, and music at the middle and high school levels. His research focuses on culturally relevant teacher education and the preparation of teachers for diverse classrooms. He has established himself as a nationally recognized scholar and outstanding teacher with considerable service and community engagement. Laughter has served on the Faculty Senate, including leadership of the faculty affairs committee. He previously supervised student teachers in Nashville and Cambridge, England, and contributed to NCATE accreditation efforts and editorial work for the National Reading Conference Yearbook.
