About Judith

Judith Shizuru is Professor of Medicine (Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy) at Stanford University. She is a member of the Stanford Blood and Marrow Transplantation faculty, the Stanford Immunology Program, and the Institute of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine. Shizuru has attended on the BMT clinical service since 1997 and oversees a research laboratory focused on improving the safety and efficacy of hematopoietic cell transplantation, the most widely practiced form of cellular therapy. Her work addresses recipient preparation for transplanted hematopoietic grafts and the impact of graft cellular content on therapeutic success, with efforts to develop novel engraftment methods that replace chemotherapy and radiation and to enable transplantation of pure blood-forming stem cell grafts.

Shizuru earned her MD from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1992, completed residency training in the Department of Medicine at UCSF in 1994, and a fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center in 1997. She is board certified in Internal Medicine. Her research interests center on the cellular and molecular basis of resistance to engraftment of allogeneic bone marrow cells, mechanisms by which bone marrow grafts modify immune responses, and the use of purified hematopoietic stem cells to induce tolerance and treat autoimmune diseases. Shizuru has received multiple honors, including postdoctoral fellowships from the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, the Cheryl Whitlock Award for Excellence in Research in Hematopoiesis in 1996, a Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award in the Biomedical Sciences from 1996 to 2000, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Junior Faculty Scholars Award from 1996 to 2000, and the Amy Strelzer Manasevit Scholar Award in 2001. She serves on scientific advisory boards and as a director for several biotechnology companies.
