About Julian

Professor Julian Paton is a Professor of Translational Physiology in the Department of Physiology at the University of Auckland, within the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. He serves as Director of Manaaki Manawa, the Centre for Heart Research, and as Co-Director of Pūtahi Manawa, the Healthy Hearts for Aotearoa New Zealand Centre of Research Excellence. Recruited to the University of Auckland in 2017 under a Vice-Chancellor’s strategic appointment, Professor Paton leads research focused on the neural regulation of the circulation and respiration, with particular emphasis on translational approaches to heart disease and heart failure.

Professor Paton holds a BSc (Hons) and PhD, having completed his doctoral training at the Royal Free Hospital, University of London. Prior to his appointment in Auckland, he held positions in the United Kingdom, including at the University of Bristol. His laboratory has developed an innovative pacemaker technology aimed at restoring natural pacing variability to treat heart failure, which has advanced to first-in-human trials and led to the spinout company Ceryx Medical. He has supervised 26 PhD students, published more than 450 papers with over 24,600 citations, and secured multiple major grants including Health Research Council programme grants and Marsden grants. In 2020 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society Te Apārangi (FRSNZ). Professor Paton received the Gluckman Medal in 2024 for exceptional contributions to heart research and the Gaston Bauer Prize from the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. He has delivered numerous public lectures on heart research and contributed to the establishment of equity-focused research initiatives at the university.
