About Julien

Professor Julien Epps is Dean of the UNSW Faculty of Engineering. He received his BE (Hons I) and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of New South Wales in 1997 and 2001 respectively. Following appointments as a Senior Research Engineer at Motorola Labs and then as a Senior Researcher and Project Leader at National ICT Australia, he joined UNSW as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications in 2007. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2014 and to Professor and Head of School in 2019. In December 2023 he was appointed Dean of the UNSW Faculty of Engineering.

Professor Epps is also Co-Director of the NSW Smart Sensing Network and has held positions as a Contributed Principal Researcher at Data61, CSIRO, and Scientific Advisor for Sonde Health. His research focuses on emotion and mental state recognition from speech and automatic task load analysis from wearable physiological and behavioural sensors. He has delivered invited tutorials and keynotes at major international conferences including INTERSPEECH, IEEE SMC, IEEE ASRU, ACII, ACM Multimedia and ACM ICMI. He serves as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing and has held leadership roles including General Chair of the International Conference on Affective Computing and Intelligent Interaction, member of the Advisory Board of the ACM International Conference on Multimodal Interaction, and member of the Executive Committee of the Association for the Advancement of Affective Computing.
