About June

Dr June Griffith was the first woman to graduate from the University of New South Wales. She was awarded a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Applied Chemistry in 1952. She later earned a Master of Science from UNSW in 1956 and a PhD from the University of Sydney in 1964. Her research focused on the chemistry and physics of wool. Griffith worked with A E Alexander from 1950 to 1964 before being appointed lecturer in the School of Chemistry at UNSW in 1966. She was promoted to senior lecturer and appointed Director of First Year Classes in Chemistry in 1968, a role she held until her death in 1978 at the age of 54. A building at UNSW Kensington is named the June Griffith Building in her honour. Her legacy continues through the annual June Griffith Memorial Prize awarded to top-performing chemistry students and the June Griffith Fellowship for Academic Women in Leadership.
